Ryland Homes is a developer and home-builder founded in 1967 and for a long time based in the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, where it was the largest homebuilder, though since 2000 it has been headquartered in southern California in Calabasas. It was founded by James Ryan, brother of Edward Ryan who founded Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based Ryan Homes. James Ryan left Ryan homes to found James Ryan Homes and the name Ryland is a combination of Ryan's name and his new home in Maryland. Ryland acquired Cincinnati, Ohio based Crest Communities in 1978, a company led by James Ryan's younger brother William Ryan. |
